Hard disks and other storage devices have different reading and writing speeds. If you wish to know how fast you can read or write on your hard drive, HD Speed can provide you with this information. It can test the sustained and burst data transfer speed on hard disks, USB flash drives, optical disks and any other storage devices. The application places many controls at your disposal and it offers rich test results.

HD Speed is freeware, which means that you don't have to pay for it. Rather than going through an installation process, you only need to extract an executable from an archive and run it. The application is compatible with numerous Windows versions, from the old and broken Windows NT4 to the recently released Windows 8.

All controls are place right in front of you, on a compact user interface. You can target a local or removable drive by selecting its corresponding letter in a drop menu. Additionally, the application allows you to choose a block size, set a starting position or limit the test to a certain duration, in minutes and seconds. By default, HD Speed will measure the sustained data transfer, on the targeted drive, but you can set it to measure the burst transfer just by clicking a check box.

The application can test a drive's reading and writing speed separately or both at the same time, with or without verification. When your selections are complete, you only need to click a button to start the test. A series of statistics are displayed in real time, during the speed test, on the same interface. The current and average speeds are displayed as numerical values and in a graph. You can set the application to display the speeds in bytes per second or in bits per second. If you wish to save the recorded information, you must click a check box and the application will store it in a plain text file.

Pros

HD Speed can measure the reading and writing speed of any memory device, from hard disks to floppies. It allows you to make a wide range of adjustments before starting the test. Also, the application is free and it doesn't need to be installed.

Cons

Testing a drive's writing speed involves destroying its contained data. With HD Speed, you can easily test the reading and writing speed of any storage device that can be plugged into your computer.
